남부뉴저지통합한국학교(교장 김정숙)는 지난 10월 5일, 뉴욕한인회가 주최한 코리안 퍼레이드에서 선두 취타대로 참가하여 한국 전통문화를 맨해튼 중심부에 알리는 중요한 역할을 수행했다. 이번 퍼레이드에는 남부뉴저지통합한국학교의 취타대 대원 6명이 참여해 행사의 품격을 높였다.
특히 남부뉴저지통합한국학교는 이번 학기에 대금 연주자인 정우성 전문 강사를 영입하며 본격적으로 취타대 양성에 나섰다. 학생들은 단소, 소금, 태평소, 용고 등 다양한 전통 악기를 배우며 한국의 전통 음악을 직접 체험하고 있다. 이번 코리안 퍼레이드에서의 활약은 그 시작을 알리는 뜻깊은 순간이었다. 정우성 전문 강사는 “그간 여러 나라와 지역의 한국학교들과 협업해 왔는데, 본교가 전통문화의 가치를 지키고 교육하는 데 선두에 있다고 판단한다. 앞으로 학교의 전폭적인 지원 속에서 세계 최고의 취타대원들을 키워내기 위해 최선을 다하겠다”고 포부를 밝혔다.
또한, 남부뉴저지통합한국학교는 그동안 육성해 온 전통 타악 연주단을 매주 추가로 1시간씩 리허설을 진행하며 더욱 강화하고 있다. 이를 통해 예술단의 기량을 더욱 향상시키고, 학생들이 한국 전통 예술을 깊이 있게 이해하고 연주할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.
남부뉴저지통합한국학교는 한인 차세대의 한국 문화 교육에 앞장서며, 앞으로도 다양한 활동을 통해 한국 전통을 널리 알리는 데 기여할 계획이다.
Korean School of Southern New Jersey Shines in the Manhattan Korean Parade with Traditional Arts
On October 5, 2024, the Korean School of Southern New Jersey (KSSNJ) played a key role in promoting Korean traditional culture in the heart of Manhattan by leading the procession as the head Korean Traditional Marching Band in the Korean Parade hosted by the Korean American Association of Greater New York. Six members of KSSNJ’s Korean Traditional Marching Band participated, adding elegance and prestige to the event.
This semester, KSSNJ took a significant step in cultivating its Korean Traditional Marching Band by recruiting Woosung Jung, a professional Daegum player, as an instructor. The students are learning various traditional instruments, including the Danso, Sogeum, Taepyeongso, and Yonggo, gaining hands-on experience with Korean traditional music. The performance in the Korean Parade marked a meaningful moment, signaling the start of their journey. Woosung Jung remarked, “I have collaborated with Korean schools in various countries and regions, and I believe that this school is at the forefront of preserving and teaching the value of traditional culture. With the school’s full support, I will do my utmost to nurture the best performers in the world.”
Additionally, KSSNJ has been reinforcing its traditional percussion ensemble by adding an extra hour of rehearsal each week. This initiative aims to further enhance the skills of the ensemble and provide students with a deeper understanding and proficiency in performing traditional Korean arts.
KSSNJ continues to lead the way in educating the next generation of Korean Americans about their cultural heritage, with plans to further promote Korean traditions through various activities.
