남부뉴저지통합한국학교(교장 김정숙)가 9월 7일, 2024-2025 학년도 개강을 맞이했다. 이 학교는 지난해부터 1학년부터 11학년을 대상으로 한국 전통문화를 필수 과목으로 지정했으며, 올해는 초등학생을 위한 새로운 교육 방식을 도입했다. 학생들은 45분씩 두 개의 한국전통문과목을 선택하여 다양한 체험을 할 수 있게 되었으며, 이는 한국 문화에 대한 학생들의 관심을 증진시키고 체험 중심 교육을 강화하기 위한 노력의 일환이다.
한국어 수업 또한 효과적인 학습을 위해 세분화되어있다. 어휘와 문법, 읽기·말하기·쓰기 등 각각의 부문으로 나누어, 두세 명의 교사가 교대로 수업을 진행하는 방식이 올해로 2년째 이어지고 있다. 이러한 방식은 학생들의 한국어 능력 향상에 크게 기여하고 있다는 긍정적인 평가를 받고 있다. 이번 신학기에는 12학년에 진급한 13명의 학생들과 성인 1명이 인턴 교사로 채용되, 그동안 배운 한국어와 한국문화를 후배들에게 가르치게 된다. 유치반, 한국어 자모음반, 미술반, 한국무용반, 모듬북반 등 각자의 재능과 관심에 따라 배치된 인턴 교사들은 급여를 받으며 첫 사회경험을 쌓게 된다.
지난 9월 14일에는 전교생을 대상으로 2023-2024 학년도 봉사활동 시상식이 학교 다목적실에서 개최되었다. 오후 12시 30분부터 진행된 시상식에서는 재미한국학교협의회에서 수여하는 차세대 리더상 수상자 17명, 대통령 자원봉사상 수상자 34명, 그리고 학교장상 수상자 19명으로 총 70명의 학생이 수상의 영예를 안았다. 이 시상식은 매년 자원봉사 활동을 통해 학생들의 사회적 기여를 격려하기 위해 열리고 있다.
Korean School of Southern New Jersey Begins New School Year, Strengthens Korean Cultural and Language Education
The Korean School of Southern New Jersey (Principal Chung Kim) commenced its 2024-2025 school year on September 7. Since last year, the school has made traditional Korean culture a mandatory subject for students from 1st to 11th grade. This year, a new educational approach has been introduced for elementary school students. They can choose two 45-minute Korean traditional culture classes, allowing them to experience various aspects of Korean culture. This initiative aims to enhance students’ interest in Korean culture and promote hands-on, experiential learning.
Korean language classes have also been further specialized for more effective learning. Subjects such as vocabulary, grammar, reading, speaking, and writing are divided into separate areas, with two to three teachers rotating to lead the classes. This system, now in its second year, has been positively received for significantly improving students’ Korean language skills. In this new semester, 13 students who advanced to the 12th grade, along with one adult, were hired as intern teachers. They will pass on their knowledge of the Korean language and culture to younger students. These intern teachers are assigned to various departments, such as the kindergarten class, Korean alphabet class, art, Korean dance, and traditional drumming, based on their talents and interests. They will be paid as they gain their first professional experience.
On September 14, the school held an awards ceremony in the multipurpose room to recognize volunteer activities from the 2023-2024 school year. Starting at 12:30 PM, the ceremony honored 70 students, including 17 recipients of the NAKS Junior Leadership Awards, 34 recipients of the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards, and 19 recipients of the Principal’s Award. This annual ceremony is held to encourage students’ contributions to society through volunteer activities.
